Common questions

How many questions are on the CDL knowledge test?

Federal rules require the knowledge test to cover 20 general areas listed in 49 CFR 383.111(a) and contain at least 30 items. States set their own exact counts above that floor — Texas, for example, uses 50 questions for General Knowledge.

What is a passing score on the CDL written test?

Each state sets its own passing score. Many states use 80% (for example, Texas requires 40 of 50 correct). The federal floor only requires a passing standard; check your state DMV's published rule for the exact number.

What parts make up the CDL exam?

The CDL exam has two stages: a knowledge (written) test and a skills test. FMCSA requires the skills test to have three parts — Vehicle Inspection, Basic Controls and Road Test — and you must pass all three.

Do I need a CDL to drive a truck?

Yes — a commercial driver's license is required to drive vehicles over 26,001 pounds GVWR (or smaller vehicles hauling hazmat or 16+ passengers). Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers in the US number about 2.24 million (2024, O*NET/BLS).

Are these the same questions as the real DMV test?

No — this site writes original practice questions based on FMCSA public handbook knowledge. They mirror the style and topics of the real exam but are not the official questions, and they are never copied from other quiz sites.

Do I need to create an account?

No. The quiz runs entirely in your browser — questions are loaded with the page and answers are scored locally. Nothing is uploaded and no account is required.
